New Year Thoughts

New Year Thoughts

For the last few days, I’ve had all sorts of thoughts swirling in my head, waiting to be shared, but a year-end cold that snuck into the new year has kept me stuck in a cycle of sneezes, sniffles, and a chorus of coughs. I gave myself permission to laze on the couch while those bold ideas circled around me. They tried to unsettle me, but I didn’t let them. I put up a fight!

The year that just ended was a good one for me, especially professionally. Sometimes I forget the huge change I made not too long ago. One day, I woke up surrounded by snow, speaking English, with no theater world in sight. I went out looking for it—and I found it! Minneapolis has a wonderful artistic community that I already feel part of, and this past year gave me more than one chance to keep doing what I love. My wish is for the wheel to keep turning and the projects to keep coming.

“My homeland is the stage” is the title of a book about the teacher Juan Carlos Gené, and ever since I’ve been here, that idea has stayed with me. But I let it be, because instead of unsettling me, it brings me peace.
